If you have passed the assessment
Congratulations to those who passed the assessment. If you will be joining the register for the first time, take a look at our Registering as a pharmacist fact sheet. This contains information about registration and looking for work.

Some newly registered pharmacists will take on the role of a locum. Important: You cannot practise as a pharmacist until you have received your GPhC registration number and your name appears on the online register. Your first-year fee payment receipt is not proof of your registration.
If you have failed the assessment
If you are unsuccessful at a registration assessment sitting, the GPhC will send you guidance with your results. This explains the appeals system, and preparing to sit the assessment again. If you have any further questions on your next steps after reading the guidance, please get in touch with the GPhC contact centre on 020 8713 8000.
If you have failed the assessment, it is only natural if you feel disappointed. Feelings of anger, despair and disappointment are common; however, it is important to try to keep your perspective. If you are facing financial difficulties following failed assessment you may be able to apply for financial assistance from us. We may also be able to help by referring you to a specialist Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) adviser for for debt and benefits advice. If you would like to be referred email us at email@example.com.
Provisionally registered pharmacists
If you are a provisionally registered pharmacist who has failed the assessment exam, you can seek additional advice from the RPS provisionally registered helpline. You do not have to be a member of the RPS to access this service. You can contact them at ProvReg@rpharms.com or call them on 0207 572 2737. This service is scheduled to run until the end of August 2021.
Trainees who have failed the assessment can no longer request a re-mark. You can submit an appeal if you believe that you have sufficient grounds to do so. The GPhC stresses that an appeal can only be made on the basis of new information/circumstances coming to light that you could not have been aware of on the day. The GPhC website has examples of situations that will not be considered grounds for appeal.
Members of the PDA can contact the organisation for advice on submitting an appeal to the GPhC. Further details can be found on the PDA website.
If something goes wrong on the day of the assessment you must inform the invigilator, and contact the GPhC as soon as possible to request a nullification. Appeals are not accepted for anything that could have formed the basis of a request for nullification. Requests for appeals must be submitted, in writing, within 21 days of the date printed on the results letter. All appeals must be submitted to the GPhC here: firstname.lastname@example.org
Even if you are waiting for the outcome of an appeal, it is advisable that you register for your next attempt of the exam by the deadline date. If you have special requirements and need adjustments, such as extra time, you will need to put in a fresh application to the GPhC. You cannot carry over any adjustments agreed for a previous exam.

The deadline for submitting an appeal for the March 2021 exam is 5pm, 20 May 2021. If you want to appeal your fail result, you can do so using Appealing a fail result in the March 2021 registration assessment form (please ensure you read the guidance at the start of the form).
If you have failed three times
If you have failed your pre-registration assessment three times, rest assured that there are a number of alternative career options available to you.
Remember that you do have a good science degree as well as your own skills, knowledge and experience and many graduate vacancies do not specify particular degree disciplines. Pharmacist Support’s careers information provides options for pharmacy graduates and has information on getting careers advice and career options, including alternative career suggestions such as teaching, further research and medical/scientific proof-reading.
You can also still submit an appeal. See above under appeals for further information.
PDA members: If this was your third and final attempt or you had to resit in summer 2021 and this takes you beyond the 8 years limitation, please contact the PDA to seek guidance on your individual circumstances.
Registering for another assessment
You do not need to meet any extra requirements to sit the registration assessment again but you should reflect on whether you were ready to sit the assessment, and if there are any other factors that may affect your performance on the day.
You may find it helpful to develop a SMART action plan to help you identify what you need to do to be ready to sit the assessment again, and to manage any factors that may affect your performance. See section 3.5 for more information about setting SMART objectives.
The actions you need to take, and the resources you will need to help you will depend on the issues and objectives you identify.
In order to undertake a third attempt at the assessment, previously trainees were required to undertake a further six-month placement. The GPhC has now removed this requirement from the regulations, so if you are sitting for a third time in 2021 you will not be required to complete an additional placement. Preparing for a re-sit
Requesting adjustments for a re-sit
If you have failed your first or second attempt at the assessment, are planning to register to sit the July 2021 assessment and you need adjustments, such as extra time, you will have to put in a fresh application to the GPhC. You cannot carry over any adjustments agreed for the previous exam. You must submit your application form by 12 noon, Friday 7 May 2021. There is no process for dealing with late adjustment requests for this sitting. For further information about applying to sit the registration assessment, see the GPhC website.
Dates for the Summer and Autumn Assessment sittings
- The sitting dates are 27, 28 and 29 July 2021
- you will be able to apply from Monday 10 May 2021 using the application form available on myGPhC. If you are not able to the view the application form on or after this date but think you may be eligible to apply, please contact the GPhC.
- You must submit your application to sit through my GPhC by Monday 31 May 2021.
- The sitting date is 16 November 2021.
