We really couldn’t do what we do without the commitment and enthusiasm of our volunteers. To mark Student Volunteering Week (10-16 Feb) we got chatting with some of our newest Student Ambassadors - First up India from Newcastle University.

We really couldn’t do what we do without the commitment and enthusiasm of our student volunteers. So to mark Student Volunteering Week (10-16 Feb) we decided to chat with some of our newest Student Ambassadors and delve into their reasons for getting involved.  First up is India from Newcastle University.

Tell us a little about yourself and your Pharmacy School

I am a second-year pharmacy student at Newcastle University. I am particularly interested in the clinical skills sessions we complete as well as hospital placements. My passion is to make a difference to the lives of patients in my care as well as promoting the work and dedication that pharmacists bring to the care of patients. My cohort is a group of approximately 80 students which is friendly and an ideal number to make connections with each member of the course. We all work together to better ourselves and encourage progress of others.

Why did you decide to become a Pharmacist Support Student Ambassador?

I am very passionate about supporting patients and colleagues of the profession. The values of Pharmacist Support can relate to each student studying pharmacy. We may never know when the services provided by Pharmacist Support may be needed for ourselves and families. Supporting such a valuable cause to care for pharmacists ultimately leads to better patient outcomes of those under our care too.

Why is the charity important to you?

The wide range of support that this charity provides is outstanding, from financial support to mental health care. I believe that the values expressed by Pharmacist Support contribute to the amazing work of pharmacists to their patients in the field. This is a very relevant charity to all in the profession.

What fundraising activities have you got planned?

We plan to set up a hot drinks and cake stall to raise funds and awareness of the work of Pharmacist Support. I also think it would be useful to do a talk to first year students to raise awareness of this charity in order to develop knowledge from the start.

Why do you think others should sign up to become PS Student Ambassadors?

It is an amazing opportunity to work with other students, meet new people and develop essential skills e.g. communication, teamwork, problem-solving etc.  Additionally, it is invaluable to gain an insight into what the charity does and how it may be of help to individuals in the future. We know that patients sometimes do not know who to turn to if they have a health issue so knowing Pharmacist Support is a place to turn to when pharmacists have an issue is very comforting, which means pharmacists can be on the top of their game to effectively care for patients.
