Managing your finances: help is here!

Keeping on top of your finances is no mean feat, and often it’s unexpected bills that throw a spanner in the works. Pharmacist Support is always here to help. We offer not only Financial Assistance, but are also there to help you to find the right information that you need whilst managing your money. A selection of money management fact sheets can be found the Information and Enquiries area of our website, and we offer a Specialist Advice service that is designed to help you understand the areas of benefits and tax credits, debts and employment.

Last week happened to be Financial Capability Week, which is dedicated to raising the awareness of financial capability, what it means and the organisations involved in making a change. It seeks to ensure that people are able to manage their money well, from day to day spending to major life events. Financial Capability Strategy UK have posted some key statistics on their website:

  • 40% of adults believe that they are not in control of their finances
  • Four in ten adults don’t have a minimum of £500 savings buffer for unexpected bills, such as replacing a fridge or mending a car
  • Around 8 million people in the UK have problems with debt, and of those just one in six is seeking help
  • 19 million people don’t have an approach to budgeting that works

Saving money might feel like a difficult task after covering all of your necessary expenses. However, there are lots of little things that you can do to save money. Such as:

  • Not buying drinks from coffee shops
  • Taking public transport/walking to work
  • Cooking for yourself more (or batch cooking and putting stuff in the freezer)
  • Turn down your heating,
  • Install a water meter
  • Change tariffs on your utility bills
  • Sell your clutter on eBay/Gumtree
  • Plan holidays in advance so flights are cheaper
  • Before you buy something, think “Do I need this?”

However, despite our best efforts, we can sometimes struggle to find the money we need. That’s where Pharmacist Support can help: we offer Financial Assistance in times of hardship, assisting pharmacists and their families, pre-registration trainees and MPharm students. This might be help with a one off cost, assistance to improve quality of life, cost of living expenses, or tuition fee expenses. You can ring Pharmacist Support confidentially and we will help you assess whether an application for financial assistance is the best route. We can also discuss what other support might be available for you.
