Dr Mahendra Patel asks those in the profession to GivaPound!

On the 17th May 2017, at the RPS Annual Fellows Dinner, Dr Mahendra Patel – Principal Enterprise Fellow in Pharmacy at the University of              Huddersfield and Fellow of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence – launched his                          GivaPound initiative.

GivaPound is a simple concept that Mahendra hopes will bring people together to enable change. Having reached a certain level in his career and keen to give back, Mahendra’s aim through this campaign is to demonstrate the value of a pound and show what a big difference loose change can    really make. Mahendra has set himself the target of raising £50,000 across the year that will be split across five national charities – Pharmacist Support, The British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Mouth Cancer Foundation and the South Asian Health Foundation.

Speaking after the launch Mahendra said “Over the years I have   become deeply attached to the central aims and      values of the chosen national charities. I have been involved in   education and research for a    significantly large part of my life, and in particular the forever worrying issues around heart disease and cancer, and the higher risk and prevalence within the South Asian population. Furthermore as a         pharmacist for many years I recognise only too well the need for me to support and help my fellow colleagues but also    students during times of hardship and unforeseen                    circumstances. The charities separately, in one way or other, make up the composite colour and texture of my life and therefore it is important I support not one but all of them and together.  It is my aim through this campaign to engage and empower younger people to get them involved in charity work and help them to increase their profiles in the process.”

Through this campaign Mahendra aims to inspire small acts of kindness through donations of £1 or more, that together can create big waves of change. He wants his 365 day      journey to offer individuals from all backgrounds a chance to be part of something big and to demonstrate just how far a pound can go.
