Johnathan is a community pharmacist and an independent prescriber. He was recently elected onto the RPS Scottish Pharmacy Board of Directors. To fundraise for Pharmacist Support Johnathan will be running 5K every day in January, and has already raised £395. Here, he tells us a little about his PS Hero story.

Why did you decide to become a 175 Hero?

Pharmacist Support needs people to actually help raise money not just be cheerleaders. A cheerleader I am not!

What hero fundraising activities did you take part in/what have you got planned?

I plan to run 5K every day in January. The total distance across the month will be 155km. This is equivalent to 96 miles. This is just short of running a marathon every week in January. For me this will be a significant achievement because I only started running using the 5K app in October. When I complete this I will keep going. If you are struggling the important thing is to keep moving forward. (You can get to Johnathan’s JustGiving page here)

Why is the charity important to you?

I don’t mind sharing that in the course of my career as a pharmacist so far I have had to come to terms with depression and some anxiety too. With support I have learned to cope with, manage and push these things to the side in my life so that I can continue to help others as a pharmacist. I have had support so quite simply I would like to help Pharmacist Support so they can continue their excellent work to help other just like me. It is OK not to be OK and just because people may suffer at various times in their lives it should never remove the chance of excelling themselves after recovering in the future.

Why do you think others should join the Pharmacist Support #175Hero Team?

Pharmacist Support will be there when people are ready. I was not ready two years ago but now I am. All I can say is that giving is one of the most fulfilling things you can do in life. I couldn’t give a lot but I can give time to raise money so I would urge anyone with the slightest inclination to dream up a challenge and go for it. If you raise as little as £1 you will be a winner.
