It is estimated that there are six million unpaid carers in the UK – that’s 10% of the total population. Three million of those combine work with their caring responsibilities (all figures taken from 2001 census). To raise awareness of this and to celebrate and recognise the contribution these people make, June 18-24 has been designated Carers Week by eight national charities: Age UK, Carers Trust, Carers UK, Independent Age, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, MS Society and Parkinson’s UK.
All these charities provide help, advice and support for carers. If you are a pharmacist and a carer, Pharmcist Support can provide information, signpost you to a relevant source or give help directly, for example, free advice on benefits entitlement, financial assistance where needed, perhaps for equipment or adaptations or a listening hear via our Listening Friends line if you would like to talk to someone.
